A group of Jewish and Palestinian women are working together on two editions of OBOS: one in Hebrew and one in Arabic. With a range of women (including university students, physicians and volunteers from different academic and cultural backgrounds) involved, the coordinators hope the project will create a platform for thought and action that will ultimately bring about political and social change in Israel.

The coordinating group has already adapted OBOS content into five booklets titled: Women’s Health and Factors Affecting Health; Understanding Gender; Violence Against Women; Sexuality, Reproduction, Sexual Health and Rights; and Body Politics. They are testing their adapted materials in community-based workshops and trainings, and working on the last two booklets – Understanding fertility and Self help - which will be published in 2008. WOREC is also involved in various advocacy initiatives and has successfully promoted women’s health and rights at the national policy level.

Although the coordinators have not raised funds for the project, they have adapted sections on STI/HIV/AIDS into alternative formats for community outreach, and identified other relevant topics, such as sexuality, sexual health, reproductive choices, relationships, and childbearing. WEDGR is also conducting outreach on the canoe transport system and marketplaces, and planning a peer educator campaign with salon hair dressers who will disseminate health and sexuality information to female clients.

Mavi Kalem has finished translating 30% of OBOS chapters and completed the cultural adaptation of four. The completed adaptation, which will include narratives of women from every region of the country, is expected to be published in 2008.

They have also launched a companion website, establishing it as a networking tool for Turkish NGOs working on women’s health, and launched a wide-scale campaign distributing badges with the slogan "my body is mine" to encourage young women’s involvement in the women’s movement.

See Why on Earth a Turkish Adaptation of Our Bodies, Ourselves?! Let me explain...
